Thornton
was named after the former Colorado governor, Dan Thornton. The first
homes were built by Sam Hoffman in 1953. 40 families initially moved into
the brand new community which grew to over 6,000 by 1955. In 1956,
Thornton passed a vote to incorporate itself as a Colorado city.
Legislation was passed, making Thornton the 11th biggest city in Colorado
at the time. Thornton continued to grow, going from 1 square mile to the
26 square mile today.
